The family life of the Night Heron

This is the story of a Night Heron Martinete Comun Nycticorax nycticorax family; Mum, Dad and the four kids.  You would think that with all the reeds and water there would be both plenty of room and food; room to stretch your legs and wings, find a spot on our own for some peace and quiet.  But, was ever family life that simple?

Well, that's most of the family.  Where are the other two?
There's sulky.  Why must he always hang around on his own?
I'm sure he gets that picking his skin from you!
That's my boy; always on the look out for something to eat.
We're going to lose him one day if he keeps wandering off on his own.
Enough of this, I need to have a good stretch before I do anything else.

I think I'll just nip indoors for a quick siesta.

Now where's he got to?
Hey Mum, Fred and Jack are still missing.
There's no point hiding down there.  I thought I told you to go and find Fred!

And so ends the day of the Night Heron family.  Good night everyone.
